The search for the gunman who shot an undercover Dallas police officer in South Oak Cliff continues Tuesday.

The gunman shot the unnamed, undercover narcotics officer inside a home near Fernwood and Ann Arbor Monday night as officers tried to serve a warrant.  The officer, who was grazed in the derriere by the bullet, was treated and released from the hospital.

Dallas Chief of Police David Brown said, prior to serving the warrant, the department had received numerous complaints from neighbors about drug activity at the home on the 4300 block of Fernwood.

"Undercover officers had made several undercover buys at this location so we confirmed, in fact, it was a drug house," said Brown.

As police approached the door Monday evening, someone inside started shooting. Brown said his officers, who returned fire, knew they were approaching a dangerous situation.

"We got really lucky," said Brown. "You know, much of what we do as police officers is that we confront danger. We confront criminals. To make this city safer, our officers are willing to put their lives on the line, and they do it every day, selflessly. This officer is very lucky here."

After the shooting, Dallas SWAT surrounded the home on the 4300 block of Fernwood and asked neighbors to remain indoors. Police believed the gunman was holed up in the house and didn't know how many other people may have been inside.

After nearly five hours, officers tossed concussion grenades into the home.  When officers entered the residence, they discovered the home was empty.

Once the gunman is captured, the suspect will face much more serious charges than the original drug warrant, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
