The FBI is joining an investigation after Saginaw police say a child's body was found dead underneath a tarp.
The FBI is joining an investigation after police say a child's body was found underneath a tarp on a Saginaw Street Monday night.
Neighborhood children discovered the tarp in the middle of the street near Roundrock Drive and Cindy Lane and thought it was garbage. When they lifted the tarp, they said they found a young girl's body.
"At first, I just thought it was some rubber stuff at first, and then I got a closer look and all I saw was a bag and I saw some hair sticking out and so, I was like, 'Oh my God! It's a girl!' And that's when I dropped to my knees and just started crying," said 18-year-old John Smith.
Witnesses said the girl appeared to be as young as 3 or 4-years-old, though police have not confirmed the age of the victim.
Witnesses also said the girl was naked, had her hands and feet bound together and a bag over her head.
"Every time I walk out that front door, I'm going to look over here and know I found a little girl. Someone's little girl, that's just sitting here miserable in the middle of the street dead, and her family's out there wondering where she's at," Smith said.
Saginaw police requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation assist their investigation after the body was removed. An FBI Evidence Response Team was collecting evidence and taking photographs of the crime scene early Tuesday morning.
"I was panicking. I was freaked out. How can somebody hurt a little girl?" said witness, Katie Whiddon.
Police said there are no reports of any missing children in the area.
Saginaw police officer Damon Ing said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning to identify the victim and learn how she was killed. Police will then provide updates with pertinent new information throughout the day.
Police are actively looking for a red pickup truck with a splash of green paint that they believe may have some connection with the case.
