The Oxford English Dictionary is catching up to the high-tech world.

The word "tweet," appearing both as a noun and a verb, was added to the dictionary despite the OED's own rule that "a new word needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion," according to Chief Editor John Simpson, who made the announcement in a blog post.

The OED got on board with other tech lingo. The words "big data," "crowdsourcing," "e-reader," "mouseover," "stream" and "redirect" also made their debut in the century-old dictionary.

"Flash mob," 3D printer" and "live-blogging" made the cut as well.

Check out new additions to the OED here.

Two North Texas men are facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly neglecting a Shetland pony that was malnourished, suffering from an infected wound and living in squalid conditions.

The owner of the pony, Jesse Ray Cross, and the pony's caretaker, Franky Lynn Hatcher-Cross, are free on bond after being arrested Saturday on charges of cruelty to livestock animals.

The pony, known as Achilles, was found in Springtown, located about 60 miles northwest of Dallas. Investigators say the pony was severely underweight and had no food or clean water nearby.

Veterinarian staff treating the pony say they will have to wait for its infection to improve before they can operate.

Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler says he will care for the animal and pay for its treatment. He has renamed the pony Achilles.

A man who admitted to lying to a 911 dispatcher that he was robbed at gunpoint, leading responding police to fatally shoot an unarmed man in Pasadena, Calif., took a plea deal for three months in jail, authorities said.

Oscar Carillo called police after his backpack was snatched from him near a taco truck on the street. He wanted police to respond quickly, so he called 911 and lied that the thief had pulled a gun on him.

Responding officers shot and killed unarmed 19-year-old Kendrec McDade, believing he had a gun.

Carillo, an immigrant from Mexico who faces the possibility of deportation upon his release, said he didn't feel as though it was his fault.

"I don't feel guilty about anything," Carillo said. "Only God knows, I don't do anything. I feel sorry. Nobody deserves to die."

Pasadena City Attorney Michelle Bagneris said Carillo's case should serve as an example for people who report false information to police.

"There are serious, potentially serious consequences when people make false reports," she said. "It's a threat to public safety, a drain to public resources."

The McDade family lawyer said prosecutors should have filed more serious, felony charges and tried to put Carillo away for longer.

"The recent slap on the wrist of Mr. Carrillo serves as yet another disappointment to the McDade family following the failure of the District Attorney's office to charge him with a felony."

Carillo might not be deported immediately, as he is named as a defendant in a lawsuit that McDade's family has filed against the city.

Carillo said the case has weighed on him heavily.

"Sometimes I feel sad," Carillo said. "But then I look at my kids. I feel better."

Dallas Mosquito Spraying Continues Tuesday

Kendra Lyn, NBC 5 News

Dallas County Health Department director Zachary Thompson told commissioners that ground spraying is working in Dallas County. He said where they have sprayed the number of mosquitoes has been cut by about 60 percent. The region was the epicenter of the national outbreak last year.

The city of Dallas on Monday night started spraying to control mosquitoes in four neighborhoods where testing has confirmed large populations of the unpopular insects but has found no cases of West Nile virus.

More spraying is planned for Tuesday night in an effort to control the spread of the deadly West Nile virus.

In the metro area, only Tarrant County has reported a human case of the disease.

Dallas County's efforts are aimed at limiting the mosquito population, which can carry the virus.

"What we see with this type of mosquito that's a carrier is, we see a fairly dramatic rise as it gets hotter in late June and July," Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said.

In a Pleasant Grove neighborhood that was set to be sprayed Monday night, joggers such as Joshua Anderson wear long pants to avoid mosquito bites.

The city of Dallas has scheduled spraying for mosquitoes, while mosquito samples collected in Flower Mound have tested positive for West Nile virus.

"God gave them wings so they can fly," Anderson said. "If they were crawling, they'd be a little better, but they can fly. They suck your blood and stuff; I don't like that."

The lack of new cases is surprising, experts said, especially considering that confirmed cases started in May last year.

Jenkins said he thinks it's "due to the vigilance not only of government but also our citizens and being much more proactive this year."

The following locations will be sprayed beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday:

  • Between McLean Avenue, Brandon Street, S. Westmoreland Road and Glenhaven Boulevard.
  • Between Grove Oaks Boulevard, Masters Drive, Old Seagoville Road, September Lane and Apache Drive.
  • Between Lewiston Avenue, Scyene Road, Masters Drive, Noweta Avenue and Koonce Avenue.
  • Between Hillcrest Road, Churchill Way, Pecan Forest Drive, Lake Edge Drive and Stone Meadow Drive.
  • Between Edgemere Road, Northport Drive, Hillcrest Road and Norway Road.
  • Between Preston Road, Northhaven Road, Tibbs Street and Azalea Lane.
  • Between Edgecrest Drive, Preston Ridge Trail, Coit Road and Spring Valley Road.
  • Between Hoblitzelle Drive, Town Street, Oberlin Drive and Granis Street.

WATCH: Jury Selection Continues in Zimmerman Trial

Jury selection for the George Zimmerman trial was set to continue to Tuesday morning.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the February 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. He has pleaded not guilty, saying he acted in self-defense.

As of Monday, 32 potential jurors have gone through the initial round of questioning, which was focused solely on pretrial publicity.

Attorneys are working to build a pool of 40 potential jurors, out of the 500 summoned, before additional questioning.

On Monday, Circuit Judge Debra Nelson granted a defense motion to extend the timeline for securing the anonymity of jurors in the trial.

Judge Nelson did not say for how long anonymity would be extended to jurors. She previously ruled that jurors' names would be kept anonymous until after a jury reaches a verdict.

Judge Nelson said Monday that she would consider the length of the extension after the verdict is reached. Defense attorney Mark O'Mara has asked for a six-month extension.

The jury that will eventually be selected to hear the case will be sequestered for the duration of the trial, Judge Nelson said last week.

Mosquito Spraying Working in Dallas County

Ground spraying to kill mosquitoes is working in Dallas County, according to officials with the city's Health and Human Services Department.

Health Department Director Zachary Thompson told County Commissioners Tuesday morning that in areas that are ground spraying, like DeSoto and Lancaster, they're seeing the number of mosquitoes reduced by 60 percent.

Dallas spray trucks are hitting the streets again Tuesday night in the ongoing fight.

"This is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes," says neighbor Gary Cannon, pointing to a wooded creek area in his Oak Cliff neighborhood.

It's just one of the areas off Grafton, where the City of Dallas is concerned just how well mosquitoes have been thriving this year.

"There have definitely been mosquitoes.  I get bitten on my ankles," said Cannon.

It makes it tough for Cannon to get in his morning walk, while trying to fight the bite.

"I walk fast," Cannon jokes.  "I'll sometimes spray repellent on."

Cannon's neighborhood is one of four areas in Dallas that ground trucks sprayed Monday night to kill off some of the pesky mosquitoes.

Four more neighborhoods will be targeted Tuesday night, where an increasing number of female mosquitoes have been trapped, the kind that are more likely to spread the deadly disease.

Right now, none of the mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in the city or by Dallas County health officials.

Thompson said Duncanville has been having an issue with a huge number of mosquitoes and they've not taken action to ground spray.  Right now, the city's policy said if mosquitoes don't test positive for the virus, crews don't spray.  Their City Council plans to address the problem at its meeting Tuesday night.

So far this season, a Fort Worth woman in her 40s is the first and only person diagnosed in the Metroplex with the disease.  But, after North Texas became the epicenter of the country's deadliest season in 2012, health leaders are striking before infected mosquitoes do.

After years of planning and debate, mass transportation is finally coming to Arlington.

Right now, Arlington is the largest city in America without buses or trains.

"That's been said about Arlington for a long time. This is a great step for the city and an important partnership," said Dick Ruddell, president of the Fort Worth Transportation Authority.

Arlington, in fact, has a larger population compared to cities like New Orleans, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.

On Monday, The T approved a two-year pilot project that will bring buses to the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington and the downtown district.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit will run the buses, which will originate from the CentrePort station.

The two-year project will cost an estimated $1.4 million.

Ruddell said the transportation endeavor will drive the city's economic growth by allowing more students to access UT Arlington's facilities and by making it possible for more people to shop and eat in the city.

Ruddell said some citizens are worried that the public buses could bring in crime and vagrancy. He said the current evidence doesn't support those fears and the buses will be safe and secure.

Buses will start running in mid-August, just a few days before fall classes start at UT Arlington. All students will be able to ride at a reduced fare.

Azle police are searching for a woman missing since about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials said the woman, 61-year-old Donna Johnstone of Springtown, may have an altered mental state, could be disoriented and has been prescribed several medications following a recent surgery.

According to a report by AzleNews, the woman became lost after leaving an appointment with her Dallas doctor Monday afternoon.  Family members, who last spoke with the woman at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, said she sounded confused and disoriented.

The woman's vehicle was found abandoned at about midnight Tuesday and police said they believe the woman to be on foot now.

A family spokesperson told the AzleNews that the woman had surgery about 10 days ago and that a pain pump and medication have left her confused and that she had no earlier signs of dementia.

Police are actively searching for the woman in the woods east of both North Ash and South Ash avenues toward Eagle Mountain Lake, AzleNews reports.

Further information, including a description and possible clothing, is expected to be released soon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Azle Police Department at 817-444-3221.
