Local Taxpayers Pick Up Tab for Hasan’s Chopper Security

Almost every day, two Army helicopters land at the Bell County Jail to pick up the man known as the "inmate of high value."

Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who's accused of gunning down dozens of fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, is that inmate.

The Army helicopters carry Hasan about 20 miles into Fort Hood so he can work on his legal defense.

Since there is no jail at the Army post, Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange houses Hasan at the Bell County Jail under a special Army contract in a special room the Army equipped to accommodate Hasan's injuries suffered when he was shot by police officers responding to the attack.

"Every time Mr. Hasan is moved to Fort Hood we incur additional security costs at our facility," said Lange.

Records obtained by NBC 5 Investigates show the Army pays Bell County roughly $15,000 a month to keep Hasan at their jail.  Lange said the money does not cover the cost of security for the helicopter rides, which now require the sheriff's department to go on lockdown twice a day to secure the perimeter.

When the choppers land, Lange said he needs to deploy snipers because Hasan is such a security risk.

Lange estimates the helicopter rides cost his department $800 per landing, twice a day, and Bell County taxpayers are footing the bill.

Lange added that the $1,600 figure didn't include the cost of the flight crew or fuel.

"I don't have any idea what that would be, but it's astronomical," Lange said. "We are losing money every day he is in our facility."

NBC 5 Investigates filed a Freedom of Information Act request in February asking for Army records detailing Hasan's transportation expenses, but nearly six months later the Army has not provided the documents and will not say how much the rides cost or answer any questions about the helicopter rides citing security concerns as the reason.

There's no doubt Hasan is a security risk. Law enforcement officials said there have been threats against Hasan as well as threats made by his supporters.   With threats from both sides, it's easy to wonder why the Army would move him so frequently.

When asked why Hasan is moved so frequently, Lange smiled and said he wasn't qualified to answer that question.  The Army said the jail doesn't have the right facilities for him to prepare his defense, especially now that he's representing himself.

Hasan's trial is set to begin Tuesday after more than three years of delays, including arguments over whether he could grow a beard – which a military judge allowed in spite of military rules.

The sheriff and other local police departments said they were happy to do their part when Hasan was arrested, they just never imagined it would go on this long.

"I don't think anybody had any idea this thing would drag out for three and a half years," said Gene Ellis, Chief of the Belton Police Department.

Belton's officers help with security, especially when the choppers can't fly and a motorcade brings Hasan through town.

Ellis said the cost to his department has been significant, but the delays are far worse for the victim's families.

"The inconvenience we have is nothing compared to their frustration levels," Ellis said.

"It makes no sense to me and I believe most Americans would feel the same way," said Howard Berry, whose son Staff Sgt. Josh Berry suffered years of post-traumatic stress after surviving the Fort Hood shooting before taking his own life on Feb. 13, 2013.

"He was tormented yeah.  That's a good word.  He was very tormented.  He was just tortured and wherever he went he couldn't find a safe place because the Army was his safe place," said Berry.

Berry said his son was constantly frustrated by the fact that Hasan had not been put on trial after more than three years of legal delays.  Meanwhile the Army declined to call the shooting an act of terrorism denying the victims additional benefits and medals awarded to other soldiers wounded in attacks overseas.

"He felt there were considerations that were being given the shooter that weren't being given the victims and he couldn't understand.  He said, 'When a soldier gets injured on a battlefield, you take care of them,' and he felt it just wasn't the case," said Berry.

Other victims told NBC 5 they feel the same way.

"All of the provisions that's been made for [Hasan], the same courtesy wasn't extended to the victims nor the families of the fallen," said Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford, who is blind in one eye after the attack on Fort Hood.

Even members of Congress are frustrated with the toll three years of delays have taken on the families.

"They've had to live day in day out re-living this event and not being able to bring this to closure.  So the delay is just really incomprehensible," said Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

Meanwhile, as NBC 5 Investigates first reported, Hasan continues to receive his full Army salary that totals more than $278,000 over the three years since the shooting.

Records show Bell County must provide a private guard for Hasan at least 12 hours a day.

So far, the cost of jailing him totals nearly $600,000, not including the helicopter rides.

For Howard Berry it's another wound in a painful process as he fights for the recognition he believes his son and the other victims deserve.

"It makes me sick.  It makes me ashamed," said Berry.  "I told him [his son] I still had his back and I still do.  I still do."

When the trial starts this week the costs will climb even higher as local police provide security for jurors and witnesses for a trial that could last two or three months.

Meanwhile, in July, three congressmen introduced legislation that would strip Hasan's salary and prevent the Army from paying other soldiers accused of serious crimes.

A 23-year-old New York City man is accused of posting an ad on Craigslist offering to sell a 2-month-old baby for $100.

The Staten Island district attorney's office said Paul Marquez, of Staten Island, admitted posting the ad twice last week, using photos of the baby and the phone number for the child's mother.

Marquez is charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanor charges.

Prosecutors say he told them that he posted the ad to get back at the baby's mother, a 19-year-old woman he had been dating.

He is being held on $1,000 bail. He was listed as having a lawyer with Legal Aid, which does not comment.

A computer glitch in reservation software for several major airlines caused delays for travelers overnight.

Southlake-based Sabre Holdings handles reservations for airlines, including American, Jet Blue, Frontier, Virgin America, Qantas and British Airways, and others.

The company said a "system issue" is to blame for an outage that occurred around 11 p.m. Monday and caused around many flights to be brought to a standstill.

Passengers reportedly had to wait in line for hours as airline representatives worked through the issues.

Passenger Spero Canton was one of the passengers delayed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

"I was actually in the middle of checking my bag in when the computer went down and the representative went to two or three different computers to find out if it was a problem with his particular computer and then we found out it was throughout the entire airport," Canton said.

Sabre fixed the problem around 2 a.m. Tuesday and flights were able to be restarted.

American Airlines said 38 flights were delayed overnight. The airline expects no more major delays and no cancellations following the restoration of the system.

In April, a similar issue caused American to ground around 900 flights.

Thieves who broke into a Dallas church stole about $2,000, including money from Sunday's offering.

Police are investigating the burglary at Christian Chapel Missionary Baptist Church on Bonnie View Road.

"We love you in Jesus' name, and we hope you get help, because this is just going to make us stronger," pastor James Johnson said.

The break-in was discovered when the deacon came in Monday morning to meet an alarm repairman.

"It is pretty ironic," Johnson said. "You just smile and go on."

Church officials said they believe someone entered through a back window and busted through a wall to get to the finance office sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. The thief avoided security cameras in the hallway.

"I don't believe it is somebody that is part of this fellowship, but it could be someone that knows this building from previous years," Johnson said.

About $2,000 was stolen from the office.

The close-knit congregation of about 75 people has been in the building since 2010.

A Hunt County taxidermy shop was destroyed by fire at about 5:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Firefighters battled the 4-alarm fire at Hood's Taxidermy on U.S. Highway 69 in Lone Oak, southeast of Greenville, but were unable to save the building.

Owner Larry Hood said he'd been in business for 18 years but had no insurance for the building. Hood said more than 30 customers had animals in the building when it caught fire.

Hood said his wife notified him that the shop was on fire after watching coverage of the blaze on NBC 5.

Hood said the shop was closed when the fire began and he did not believe there was anything in the building that would have ignited. Fire officials have not released a cause of the fire.

Hood asked customers who may have lost animals in the fire to contact him at 903-450-7724.

Body Found in Boulevard House Fire

Officials are calling the death of a person in a Boulevard house fire "suspicious."

A San Diego man is the subject of a nationwide manhunt, the suspect in a double murder and double kidnapping.

Neighbors of James Lee DiMaggio were shocked to learn two people as well as a dog were found dead inside DiMaggio's log-cabin style home Monday.

Deputies were called to 2071 Ross Avenue in the unincorporated community of Boulevard around 8 p.m. Sunday to find the home and detached 3-car garage engulfed in flames.

Hours after the discovery of 44-year-old Christina Anderson and an unidentified boy, deputies put out an Amber Alert for DiMaggio and Anderson's 8-year-old son Ethan and 16-year-old daughter Hannah.

Deputies believe DiMaggio murdered Anderson and then set the structures on fire.

Ethan is 4-feet, 11-inches tall, weighing 65 pounds with sandy blonde hair. Hannah is 5-feet, 7-inches tall, 115 pounds with blue eyes, a nose stud, pierced ears and a belly button ring.

DiMaggio is 40 years old, 5-foto 9- inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. His beard and moustache have recently been shaved off officials said.

They are believed to be traveling in a 4-door, blue Nissan Versa with license plate 6WCU986.

"It's believed that one or both of the children have been abducted by DiMaggio whose whereabouts are also unknown," said San Diego County homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.

Neighbors were in disbelief Monday. They say DiMaggio is a kind, giving and laid back person who the Anderson children considered an uncle.

They believe DiMaggio had planned to take Ethan camping or hunting and authorities may not be able to reach him because he's out of cell phone range.

Christina Anderson was an old friend of DiMaggio who would come to visit him once or twice a month according to neighbors. Giannantonio said Christina Anderson and DiMaggio were not romantically involved but have a close friendship.

They say the Anderson children got along well with other children in the neighborhood but they recently came more often.

"We believe that if they are with DiMaggio that they are in danger," Giannantonio said adding that FBI agents have been asked to help in the investigation.

Anyone who spots the children or DiMaggio should call 911 he said.

Giannantonio could not disclose how Anderson was killed. He said the medical examiner will try and identify the burned remains of the child found in the rubble.

Anderson lived with her two children in Lakeside according to officials. The children were last seen on Aug. 3 officials said. The grandparents reported the children missing.

Officials also found remains of weapons found that were burned in the fire but would not reveal the number or type of weapons found.

Mayor Bob Filner Admits He Needs Help

Mayor Bob Filner's prepared video statement released Thursday, the same day three high-profile allies accused him of sexually harassing female employees.

More Photos and Videos

New documents obtained by NBC 7 show that San Diego Mayor Bob Filner was approached by his staff about sexual harassment allegations weeks before he was publicly accused of acting inappropriately toward women.

Special Section: Mayor Under Fire

The handwritten documents reveal that there was a serious discussion about staff resignations, sexual harassment allegations and the mayor's behavior on June 20 and 29.

The notes were released after the city attorney's office threatened to sue the mayor's chief of staff, Lee Burdick, who had refused to give copies of the documents to the media, claiming "attorney-client" privilege.

In the notes, former communications director Irene McCormack Jackson, former Chief of Staff Vince Hall and former Deputy Chief of Staff Allen Jones discuss low morale in the mayor's office and call Filner's behavior "unacceptable."

The notes also show that Jones gives the mayor an ultimatum, saying that if Filner doesn't change Jones will quit.

Jones, Hall and Jackson all left the mayor's office shortly after these meetings took place. McCormack later filed a civil suit against Filner, accusing him of sexual harassment.

The sexual harassment allegations against Filner are now under review by criminal investigators.

On Monday afternoon, the state Attorney General's Office and San Diego County Sheriff's Department questioned McCormack, who entered the attorney general's building with her high-profile attorney Gloria Allred, who specializes in women's rights cases.

Allred wants Filner, who's in behavior therapy for two weeks, to give depositions in the case.

"I think this is unprecedented, for this many women coming forward against the mayor of a major city," Allred said. "And I don't think that the end is in sight. I'm sure that it isn't."

The allegations of sexual harassment that McCormack has leveled include grabbing her in a headlock and trying to kiss her, suggesting she might do a better job if she came to work without underwear on.

And legal analysts say it's possible they're looking into whether those purported acts arise to the level of criminal sexual assault. Either way, there's now potential for Filner to claim Fifth Amendment protection against testifying in the civil case, because he's under law enforcement scrutiny.

Allred said Filner first has to show up for the deposition on Aug. 9 before he could "plead the fifth." She also said if he doesn't show up, he could be subject to contempt of court.

In the meantime, Allred and McCormack are waiting to hear from Filner's privately retained civil attorney regarding their next move.

4 Friends Shot as Masked Gunman Opens Fire on NJ Street

advertisement

Police are looking for a masked gunman who approached four friends walking down a street in a northern New Jersey town early Tuesday and opened fire, wounding all of them in what authorities believed to be a targeted attack on a young woman in the group, authorities say.

Officials say no words were exchanged when the gunman fired up to nine shots at the 18-year-old woman, 20-year-old man, 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy as they walked on Mission Street in Montclair around 1 a.m.

Police say a preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was targeted, and that the female victim was likely the intended target. She was shot in the chest and was the most severely injured of the four. Police say she had been targeted in a shooting last week, but was not hurt in that case.

Authorities said it wasn't clear why she was targeted.

Authorities said the 20-year-old man who was with her Tuesday morning was shot in the arm; the 18-year-old man was wounded in the buttocks and the 17-year-old victim was shot in the leg. All three were taken to the hospital in stable condition and are expected to be OK.

Police said the suspect fled down Elmwood Avenue after firing the shots and hopped into a getaway car that was last seen heading east on Elmwood.

Water Main Break Floods Dallas Streets

A water main break near 2800 West Lawther in Dallas sent water flooding into the immediate area near White Rock Lake.

Water Main Break Floods Streets

Dallas Water Utilities says they are responding to a water main break near White Rock Lake.

More Photos and Videos

Dallas utility crews continue to work on a broken water main that turned a Dallas street into a giant wave pool Monday morning.

The pipeline failed near the corner of White Rock Road and Lawther Drive, flooding roads and catching drivers and neighbors off-guard.

City officials said the 2800 block of White Rock Road between Winstead Drive and West Lawther Drive would remain closed for at least one to two days. Temporary detours are being implemented.

Dallas Water Utility crews will work nonstop until repairs are complete.

The cause of the failure is not yet known.

The water has receded from Winsted Drive, but silt remains from the flood waters. A water-line shows just how high the water got before the city could shut off the tap to Dallas' third-largest pipeline.

Lynn Meyer cleaned up and hosed off his driveway after a wild wakeup call from police at his door. Officers warned Meyer about the nearby 7-foot pipeline burst that was flooding his garage.

"The garage was wet, the inside of the car was wet," Meyer said. "It got higher in the backyard, where this guy's car is."

The driver of a once-submerged Honda said he was heading to work at the hospital, but never made it. He couldn't see that water was covering the raod because that area of Winsted Drive does not have streetlights, he said. Like others, he had to wade out in waist-deep water.

"The second gentleman tried to drive out at 5 a.m.," Monica Ferguson. "It was still dark, not realizing. He obviously stopped when his car died."

"It looked like this place was all flooded," said a 6-year-old girl, saying nearby ducks liked it.

"They flew in and then they swimmed," she said.

"It was like a lake, like a river flowing down this way," said Winsted Apartment resident Crystal Szoelloesi.

It took crews more than two hours to isolate the problem in the pipeline, which flows from Jim Miller Road in South Dallas all the way to Belt Line Road in Addison.

"It's a very important pipeline of ours," said Randy Payton, Dallas Water Utilities assistant manager.

Payton said Dallas has other lines and water in reserve, so the break didn't affect customers.

NBC 5 reporter Keaton Fox posted this video to Vine of the bubbling water from the break:

Experts said hot dry weather, Texas soil and an aging infrastructure can be blamed for water main breaks.

"The heat of the summer this time of year pulls moisture out of the soils, causes them to shift, the brittle pipes can't move with the soils so they break," said Devon Tiner, Fort Worth Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers president.

Rachel Hayden, president of the Dallas branch, said she expects to see more water main breaks.

"It's going to happen no matter what," she said. "You want to try and get out and replace those pipelines earlier before they break, because the disruption to your population is damaging."

Water crews said the line that broke Monday was more than 30 years old. Four water main lines broke last week as summer temperatures began rising in North Texas.

NBC 5's Kevin Cokley contributed to this report.

Police are investigating the sexual assault of a woman who was attacked near her gated community in Uptown Dallas.

The woman was attacked near her gated townhome community across the street from Griggs Park in the 2100 block of Clark Street at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Uptown thrives on young professionals who relish being able to walk all hours of the day and night to many of the shops, restaurants and bars in the area. Its populace is on high alert after the attack.

JoAnna Peters, who lives along Clark Street, said she is more cautious, especially at night.

"I went out last night and ... you do keep a little bit more aware of what's going on around you a bit," she said.

Dallas police said the victim in Saturday's attack was able to awaken several neighbors by screaming and banging on their doors.

A woman who did not want to be identified said her daughter helped.

"I think my daughter handled it wonderfully," she said. "She was able to help, but now I think it's setting in. I think it makes her nervous. I think she's a little nervous about it."

Residents said an abandoned home next the gated area where the attack occurred concerns them, saying it is a perfect place for an ambush. The home's windows are boarded up but the house remains insecure.

The Dallas Police Department has not released a description of the attacker.

The management company for the townhomes and apartments has issued a letter warning residents to take precautions.

Peters said she would walk her dogs with friends at night and carry personal protection, something she wasn't thinking about a week ago.

"I'm used to walking around here at night and not thinking about that anything like that at all," she said. "Knowing that just happened on our street is pretty scary. [I] definitely lost a little bit of confidence in the neighborhood."

Doctors are seeing a spike in a virus that targets children.

Hand, foot and mouth disease, which usually affects infants and children under than 5, is most common during the summer months.

Melanie Melugin, of Frisco, said her daughter, who is almost 2, got it last week. Her fever spiked and a doctor found sores in her mouth.

"It is a terrible virus," Melugin said. "There is nothing you can do about it but wait it out."

Hand, foot and mouth disease is an intestinal virus that can be spread by unwashed hands. The virus causes red spots and water blisters on the palms of hands, soles of feet and the mouth.

It is not treatable by antibiotics.

Melugin said she quickly discovered her daughter wasn't alone when she posted about the virus on Facebook. Several of her friends said their children also had it, as well as some parents.

She made her daughter always washed her hands and tried to limit her contact with her brother, who did not contract it.

A week later, all is well at home.

"[I'm] very, very relieved because now she is back to her happy self," Melugin said.

Officer Opens Fire After Dog Jumps From Car Window

advertisement

An officer shot and killed a Southern California man's dog after it jumped from an open car window and lunged at officers who were taking the Rottweiler's owner into custody on suspicion of interfering with a SWAT stand-off.

Police arrested Leon Rosby, 52, near the scene of the SWAT stand-off in Hawthorne, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Rosby was walking his Rottweiler, Max, and recording the stand-off with armed robbers on his cell phone camera.

"I never meant my dog to be killed and shot like that," Rosby said Tuesday. "He wasn't just shot. He was executed."

A statement from the Hawthorne Police Department detailed his alleged interference: "This interference included loud, distracting music (from the individual's vehicle), and his intentional walking within close proximity to armed officers, while holding an 80-pound Rottweiler on a long leash-line," the statement said.

The video, posted on YouTube (Warning: Disturbing Content), showed Rosby walking his dog along a sidewalk and recording officers on his cell phone. Another man who was also apparently recording the police incident was standing just a few feet away from Rosby, but he was not approached by officers.

Officers stared at Rosby for several seconds and began walking toward him. Rosby placed his dog into his car and, as officers approached, turned around and put his hands behind his back.

Rosby can be heard saying something about civil rights.

"They had asked me why am I there?" Rosby later told NBC4. "And I said I was filming them so that no one's civil rights were being violated."

The officers handcuffed him and the dog began barking out of one of the car's open windows. The dog jumped out and barked at the officers.

One of the officers reached toward the dog several times, apparently trying to grab its leash. The dog lunged at him and he fired four shots at the dog.

The Hawthorne Police Department statement continued, "Fearing that the attacking Rottweiler would imminently bite the officer(s), one officer fired his duty weapon several times, striking and killing the dog."

The dog fell to the ground, yelping and writhing in the street. The animal's owner, still handcuffed, cried out and his legs buckled.

The video is available on YouTube here. Warning: As previously described, it contains extremely disturbing content.

Michael Gulden, Rosby's attorney, said his client was targeted because he had a pending lawsuit against the Hawthorne Police Department. Rosby alleged that police beat him without cause.

"We'll be amending the complaint to include another excessive force action as well," Gulden said.

When McLean arrived, McCommas pulled out a gun and shot him, witnessess said.  McCommas then fled the scene before getting into a shootout with law enforcement near Granbury town square. McCommas was shot and killed by police in that exchange of gunfire.

McLean, a husband and father of two special needs children, was hospitalized in Fort Worth. He died from his injuries at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at John Peter Smith Hospital.

4 Dead, Including Unborn Child, in Fort Worth Shooting

Two Women, Child Shot in Fort Worth

Three people, including a child and a pregnant woman, were shot in Fort Worth on Monday.

More Photos and Videos

Fort Worth police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting that killed four people Monday night, including an unborn child.

According to police, Chanice Renee Reed, 21, Annette Carroll Reed, 39 and Eddie McCuin, 10, were shot at about 6:15 p.m. on the 2900 block of Pate Drive.

All three of the victims were taken to different hospitals for treatment, including Chanice Reed who was 32-34 weeks pregnant.  Doctors were unable to save any of the victims, including Reed's unborn child.

Fort Worth police have arrested 22-year-old Amos Wells in connection with the shooting and have charged him with capital murder.  Wells is currently being held on a $2 million bond after turning himself in to police.

Family members of the victims said Wells is the boyfriend of Chanice Reed as well as the father of her unborn child. They struggle to understand how someone they've known for so long is now accused of killing four of their family members.

"How could you? How could you take away innocent lives like that?" said family member Monique Myers.

Myers said she just talked with her cousin Chanice on Monday about Amos Wells, her on-again, off-again boyfriend.

"She told me he was controlling.  He didn't like her being with her own family.  I talked to her and said, 'Chanice, leave him,'" Myers said, who added that she never thought the couple's problems would end with a deadly shooting.

The victim's family told NBC 5 that Wells shot Chanice's mom, Ann, in the yard before confronting and shooting her at the front door. Afterward, family members said he killed Ann's youngest child, Eddie McCuin.

"He just shot her point blank, because she was in the door, went into the room and shot my cousin, Eddie, three times," Myers said.  "You're going to have a child yourself.  For you to kill the mom, mother of your child, her brother, you don't have a heart.  It's going to be a cold day in hell."

NBC 5 was there as tension flared as Monique and several other family members crossed the police barricade and ran to the family's home.

"At that time, we didn't know anything.  We just took off running," said mother Shauna Myers-Berry.

The scuffle with police got Shauna's son and other daughter arrested for assault and interfering with officers guarding the crime scene.

"The only thing we were thinking, don't stop us, tell us what's going on," Monique Myers said.

They now know in an instant, they've gone from planning a baby shower to planning four funerals.

"You love a person, you're not supposed to hurt them. That's not the way, just not the way," said Shauna Myers-Berry.

Police reports show Jermey Myers, 20, was arrested for assaulting an officer and Kalie Myers, 18, was arrested for interfering with police duties for impeding officers trying to guard the crime scene.

NBC 5's Ben Russell and Kendra Lyn contributed to this report.

Child's Body Discovered Underneath Tarp

The FBI is joining an investigation after Saginaw police say a child's body was found dead underneath a tarp.

More Photos and Videos

The FBI is joining an investigation after police say a child's body was found underneath a tarp on a Saginaw Street Monday night.

Neighborhood children discovered the tarp in the middle of the street near Roundrock Drive and Cindy Lane and thought it was garbage. When they lifted the tarp, they said they found a young girl's body.

"At first, I just thought it was some rubber stuff at first, and then I got a closer look and all I saw was a bag and I saw some hair sticking out and so, I was like, 'Oh my God! It's a girl!' And that's when I dropped to my knees and just started crying," said 18-year-old John Smith.

Witnesses said the girl appeared to be as young as 3 or 4-years-old, though police have not confirmed the age of the victim.

Witnesses also said the girl was naked, had her hands and feet bound together and a bag over her head.

"Every time I walk out that front door, I'm going to look over here and know I found a little girl. Someone's little girl, that's just sitting here miserable in the middle of the street dead, and her family's out there wondering where she's at," Smith said.

Saginaw police requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation assist their investigation after the body was removed. An FBI Evidence Response Team was collecting evidence and taking photographs of the crime scene early Tuesday morning.

"I was panicking. I was freaked out. How can somebody hurt a little girl?" said witness, Katie Whiddon.

Police said there are no reports of any missing children in the area.

Saginaw police officer Damon Ing said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning to identify the victim and learn how she was killed. Police will then provide updates with pertinent new information throughout the day.

Police are actively looking for a red pickup truck with a splash of green paint that they believe may have some connection with the case.

A parade and victory rally will be held Friday morning to congratulate the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office announced Tuesday morning in a statement.

Additional details, including the location, exact time and route, have yet to be announced.

The last celebration, in 2010, was one of the biggest public events the city had ever seen. City officials estimated the crowd at roughly two million people.

Celebrations erupted Monday night after the team's win, with fans spilling out onto streets in Wrigleyville and near the United Center.

Emanuel was quick with kind words Monday night after the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Boston Bruins to bring the Stanley Cup back to the Windy City for the second time in four years.

"The City of Chicago is thrilled to congratulate our own Chicago Blackhawks on their hard-fought victory, once again bringing the Stanley Cup back to their sweet home Chicago," he said in a statement. "Our best wishes go out to the Bruins and the city of Boston for a well-played series. In the past few months, the people of Boston have showed how they can pull together and the Bruins have represented that same spirit, demonstrating what makes Boston a truly world-class city. Our congratulations go out to Rocky Wirtz, Coach Joel Quenneville, the incredible Blackhawks players, and the whole Blackhawks family for their dedication and determination to make Chicago a championship city once again. The City of Big Shoulders stood shoulder to shoulder with the Blackhawks all season and we are all looking forward to welcoming them home as champions."

Two sisters from Miami were both charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in the Florida Keys Saturday night, authorities said.

After they were stopped by deputies, Steffany Miranda, 18, and Vanessa Miranda, 24, switched seats in the Volkswagen they were traveling in, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Deputy Juan Martin-Reyes, who followed the car north from the 23-mile marker to the 30-mile marker of U.S. 1, saw the Volkswagen swerving, increasing and decreasing speeds and braking suddenly, according to the sheriff's office.

When Martin-Reyes turned on his vehicle's lights and siren, the Volkswagen stopped suddenly in the traffic lane, and through the back window he could see the driver and passenger quickly switch seats, the sheriff's office said.

After Deputy Spencer Curry arrived, the two deputies had the Mirandas perform field sobriety exercises. Both had trouble doing so, and they were visibly impaired and smelled of alcohol, according to the deputies.

Both sisters were charged with DUI because at some point they were both in control of the car behind the steering wheel with the keys in the ignition, the sheriff's office said.

Santorum Named CEO of Christian Film Company

Former U.S. Senator and GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum is bringing Christian films to the big screen.

EchoLight Studios said Monday that Santorum, known for his socially conservative views, has been named CEO of the Dallas-based Christian film production company.

Santorum said he has always had an interest in shaping cultural messages and joined the company's board a year ago. He believes EchoLight has the opportunity to transform the movie industry by tapping into the demand for high-quality films with a focus on "inspirational and uplifting" Christian messages.

There are a number of smaller Christian film companies. Sony Films has its own division, Affirm Films, and which released "Soul Surfer." Actors such as Mel Gibson and Kirk Cameron have promoted their movies that have Christian messages. Still, the market remains under the radar.

Bruce Goerlich, chief research officer at industry data tracking firm Rentrak, said that family movies are significant box office contributors, having grossed nearly $1.3 billion out of the total $10.8 billion box office during 2012. Faith-based TV programming has also drawn viewers. The History Channel quadrupled their usual Sunday night ratings in March with the series "The Bible."

"You have millions of Americans who don't go to the movies because they don't want to see, and they don't want their children seeing, certain content," Santorum said. He believes that Dallas can become the Hollywood of the faith-and-family movie market.

EchoLight's films are small by Hollywood standards, with production budgets of $1 million to $3 million. The company's first film, a story about a bank robber set in the Old West, is called "The Redemption of Henry Myers" and is scheduled to be released this fall. A second film is slated for release in 2014.

The company is funded mostly by three investors from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, whose names Santorum would not disclose. There are also a few small investors in EchoLight, including Santorum.

The nearly eight-minute video shows a man weaving in and out of traffic on the 110 Freeway, shouting racial slurs and hurling bottles and cans. At one point, the road-raging man gets out of his car, runs at the victim's vehicle and appears to throw something inside.

Austin Ho -- the victim -- captured the incident on his dashboard-mounted camera (below).

Ho said he later hand-delivered the footage to the California Highway Patrol.

"They didn't believe my story when I just told them," Ho told NBC4. "I showed them the video, and once they saw the video, they realized how crazy this guy was."

Fight Turns Deadly at Dallas Disco

advertisement

A night of dancing ended with a deadly shooting outside of a West Dallas nightclub early Tuesday morning.

Dallas police said a fight outside of El Rio Disco, at 704 S. Walton Walker, ended with gunfire in a parking lot packed with people.

Police said after being shot in the chest, 19-year-old Jose Peralta ran across the parking lot to the nearby Shell gas station for help.

An officer at the gas station tried to save Peralta, but he later died at Dallas' Methodist Central Hospital.

Homicide detectives arrested Raul Zuniga, 17, and learned that Zuniga and Peralta had been in previous fights, which continued overnight at the club.

According to police, both Zuniga and Peralta were removed from the club and, as Peralta and his friends were in the parking lot, Zuniga restarted the fight and shot Peralta.

Crime scene technicians recovered a gun in the gas station parking lot.

Club-goer Maria Bello said she stopped for a drink at the gas station just when the club's closing time turned chaotic. Bello believes some of the men involved in the fight jumped in her unlocked car.

"There was blood, there was people everywhere.  I couldn't go anywhere, because I didn't want to hit someone's car.  Then I had like four guys hitting my car, just trying to get in my car," said Bello.

Officers took several witnesses to the shooting to police headquarters for questioning.

This is at least the second homicide this year after closing time at El Rio Disco.  In January, a man was robbed, shot and killed, while walking home from the club with friends.  Last July, a 20-year-old woman was reported missing after she said she and a friend were abducted after leaving the club.  The woman was missing for 24 hours before she was found after she managed to escape her captors.

DISD Scrambling to Find Summer School Instructors

advertisement

It's back-to-the books for summer school students on Tuesday in Dallas, but not for many teachers -- a shortage has left DISD leaders scrambling to find instructors.

"I just think it's awful. I just think if they had the interest of the children at heart, they would not do this," says grandmother Brenda Strickland.

Strickland believes a teacher's place is at the head of the classroom, teaching.  She drove her grandson across town for summer school not knowing if he'd have class.

Teachers associations said hundreds of teachers are protesting summer school and taking a stand against Superintendent Mike Miles and changes in the district's policies.

"It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to come up with something better than that," Strickland says.

"I think it's the students that will suffer," says mother Keitwanna Cotton.

National Education Association President Angela Davis argues it's the teachers who have been suffering under the district's heavy-handed management style, intense scrutiny and random evaluations.

"During the regular school year, the teachers were so stressed out that they just can't do summer school," Davis says.

The district calls the summer school teacher shortage "critical," but says it'll make adjustments ensuing students are making the grade.

"We had planned to have class sizes at about 16 to 18 to 1.  It may be a little bit more than that but we'll just have to see," says DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander.

Many kids feel if they have to be in class, so should the teachers.

"There will be more students in each class and distract each other, and we won't learn anything.  There will be no point, pretty much, coming," says Junior Ashley Guillen.

"I'm here to take a class I failed,"; says summer school student Lucero Castro.

"It'll be the same, just fail again," says Sophomore David Lopez.

Strickland believes this summer, it's the teachers failing the students.

"When I was coming up, our teachers cared.  They wouldn't have dared do anything like this.  It was about the students.  It was caring," Strickland says.

The district says it'll know soon how extreme the teacher shortage may be, now that classes have started and students are registered.

Disgraced Deen Still Scheduled for Dallas Event

Organizers of a Dallas cooking event say they have no plans to drop disgraced chef Paula Deen from the lineup.

Deen is scheduled to appear at the Metro Cooking Dallas show on September 21.

Deen faces a lawsuit from one of her former employees who said she used racial slurs and other hurtful remarks. As the information about her previous comments came to light, multiple sponsors have pulled away from supporting Deen.

Food Network, QVC, and Smithfield have all pulled their support from the southern culinary star, but the organizers of the local event are sticking close to their "friend."

A statement on the organizer's website reads:
"Paula Deen has been a friend of the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show for many years. She has apologized and we are taking her apology at her word and moving forward accordingly."

Deen is scheduled for an interview with NBC's Today Show on Wednesday. She did not appear for a previously scheduled interview with the program last week.

Man Says Killing Puppies With a Stick Was Humane

advertisement

A Tarrant County man admits to killing three puppies with a stick before setting their bodies on fire in a barrel.

Chris Apala, 33, told NBC 5 the puppies were suffering, so he did the "humane thing" and then "cremated them."

Apala and his girlfriend, 38-year-old Melissa Woodard, and their eight dogs, were living at her sister's home on the 7300 block of Cottonwood Creek Road in northwest Tarrant County. On Saturday, Woodard's sister called 911 after finding three of those dogs burned dogs in a barrel.

Woodard and Apala were arrested in connection with the burned dogs and taken to the Tarrant County Jail; both now face animal cruelty charges and are being held on $15,000 bond.

Apala spoke with NBC 5 from the Tarrant County Jail on Tuesday.

"I took a stick, because they would not eat, they would not drink, they would not do anything but just lay there and whine, so I hit them with the stick one time a piece and let them lay there to make sure they were dead," Apala said in a jailhouse interview Tuesday.

Apala said that after about 20 minutes, where the dogs didn't move, he wrapped them in a sheet and "put them in a burn barrel and I burned them, like you would a human; cremation, instead of burying them."

Woodard told NBC 5 she had no knowledge of Apala killing or burning the dogs and that the puppies, which were less than 6-weeks-old, starved to death.

Apala and Woodard both admit to using methamphetamines and said they were hungry and unable to feed themselves. However, both said they were getting their drugs for free and not choosing to purchase drugs instead of food for themselves or their seven pets.

Apala and Woodard said none of their family members would help them with food or the dogs and Apala added that the Humane Society refused to come pick up the animals because they lived in a remote part of Tarrant County.

Tammy Hawley, the director of the Humane Society of North Texas could not confirm her organization ever received a phone call from Apala, but said, "We do offer a 24 hour emergency service. I assure you, if someone called and said we have animals, we would have made arrangements to pick them up, at no fee. It doesn't matter where the animal is."

Apala said he did not set the puppies on fire until he was certain they were dead, though Tarrant County investigators are still trying to determine if the puppies were killed before or after they were burned.

When asked if Apala's actions were humane, Hawley said, "No. Absolutely not. He's not qualified to determine that the animals were deceased. They could have been unconscious and burned alive."

Hawley said that's why state law requires animal professions to be certified in euthanasia so they can accurately certify death.

Apala said he is surprised by the charges. He said he is an animal lover and plans to immediately get another dog when he is released from jail.

Oxford English Dictionary Adds "Tweet" and "Big Data"

"Tweet" and other words that describe new technology made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary in June.

The Oxford English Dictionary is catching up to the high-tech world.

The word "tweet," appearing both as a noun and a verb, was added to the dictionary despite the OED's own rule that "a new word needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion," according to Chief Editor John Simpson, who made the announcement in a blog post.

The OED got on board with other tech lingo. The words "big data," "crowdsourcing," "e-reader," "mouseover," "stream" and "redirect" also made their debut in the century-old dictionary.

"Flash mob," 3D printer" and "live-blogging" made the cut as well.

Two North Texas men are facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly neglecting a Shetland pony that was malnourished, suffering from an infected wound and living in squalid conditions.

The owner of the pony, Jesse Ray Cross, and the pony's caretaker, Franky Lynn Hatcher-Cross, are free on bond after being arrested Saturday on charges of cruelty to livestock animals.

The pony, known as Achilles, was found in Springtown, located about 60 miles northwest of Dallas. Investigators say the pony was severely underweight and had no food or clean water nearby.

Veterinarian staff treating the pony say they will have to wait for its infection to improve before they can operate.

Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler says he will care for the animal and pay for its treatment. He has renamed the pony Achilles.

A man who admitted to lying to a 911 dispatcher that he was robbed at gunpoint, leading responding police to fatally shoot an unarmed man in Pasadena, Calif., took a plea deal for three months in jail, authorities said.

Oscar Carillo called police after his backpack was snatched from him near a taco truck on the street. He wanted police to respond quickly, so he called 911 and lied that the thief had pulled a gun on him.

Responding officers shot and killed unarmed 19-year-old Kendrec McDade, believing he had a gun.

Carillo, an immigrant from Mexico who faces the possibility of deportation upon his release, said he didn't feel as though it was his fault.

"I don't feel guilty about anything," Carillo said. "Only God knows, I don't do anything. I feel sorry. Nobody deserves to die."

Pasadena City Attorney Michelle Bagneris said Carillo's case should serve as an example for people who report false information to police.

"There are serious, potentially serious consequences when people make false reports," she said. "It's a threat to public safety, a drain to public resources."

The McDade family lawyer said prosecutors should have filed more serious, felony charges and tried to put Carillo away for longer.

"The recent slap on the wrist of Mr. Carrillo serves as yet another disappointment to the McDade family following the failure of the District Attorney's office to charge him with a felony."

Carillo might not be deported immediately, as he is named as a defendant in a lawsuit that McDade's family has filed against the city.

Carillo said the case has weighed on him heavily.

"Sometimes I feel sad," Carillo said. "But then I look at my kids. I feel better."

Dallas Mosquito Spraying Continues Tuesday

The city of Dallas on Monday night started spraying to control mosquitoes in four neighborhoods where testing has confirmed large populations of the unpopular insects but has found no cases of West Nile virus.

More spraying is planned for Tuesday night in an effort to control the spread of the deadly West Nile virus.

In the metro area, only Tarrant County has reported a human case of the disease.

Dallas County's efforts are aimed at limiting the mosquito population, which can carry the virus.

"What we see with this type of mosquito that's a carrier is, we see a fairly dramatic rise as it gets hotter in late June and July," Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said.

In a Pleasant Grove neighborhood that was set to be sprayed Monday night, joggers such as Joshua Anderson wear long pants to avoid mosquito bites.

The city of Dallas has scheduled spraying for mosquitoes, while mosquito samples collected in Flower Mound have tested positive for West Nile virus.

"God gave them wings so they can fly," Anderson said. "If they were crawling, they'd be a little better, but they can fly. They suck your blood and stuff; I don't like that."

The lack of new cases is surprising, experts said, especially considering that confirmed cases started in May last year.

Jenkins said he thinks it's "due to the vigilance not only of government but also our citizens and being much more proactive this year."

The following locations will be sprayed beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday:

  • Between McLean Avenue, Brandon Street, S. Westmoreland Road and Glenhaven Boulevard.
  • Between Grove Oaks Boulevard, Masters Drive, Old Seagoville Road, September Lane and Apache Drive.
  • Between Lewiston Avenue, Scyene Road, Masters Drive, Noweta Avenue and Koonce Avenue.

WATCH: Jury Selection Continues in Zimmerman Trial

Jury selection for the George Zimmerman trial was set to continue to Tuesday morning.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the February 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. He has pleaded not guilty, saying he acted in self-defense.

As of Monday, 32 potential jurors have gone through the initial round of questioning, which was focused solely on pretrial publicity.

Attorneys are working to build a pool of 40 potential jurors, out of the 500 summoned, before additional questioning.

On Monday, Circuit Judge Debra Nelson granted a defense motion to extend the timeline for securing the anonymity of jurors in the trial.

Judge Nelson did not say for how long anonymity would be extended to jurors. She previously ruled that jurors' names would be kept anonymous until after a jury reaches a verdict.

Judge Nelson said Monday that she would consider the length of the extension after the verdict is reached. Defense attorney Mark O'Mara has asked for a six-month extension.

The jury that will eventually be selected to hear the case will be sequestered for the duration of the trial, Judge Nelson said last week.

Mosquito Spraying Working in Dallas County

advertisement

Ground spraying to kill mosquitoes is working in Dallas County, according to officials with the city's Health and Human Services Department.

Health Department Director Zachary Thompson told County Commissioners Tuesday morning that in areas that are ground spraying, like DeSoto and Lancaster, they're seeing the number of mosquitoes reduced by 60 percent.

Dallas spray trucks are hitting the streets again Tuesday night in the ongoing fight.

"This is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes," says neighbor Gary Cannon, pointing to a wooded creek area in his Oak Cliff neighborhood.

It's just one of the areas off Grafton, where the City of Dallas is concerned just how well mosquitoes have been thriving this year.

"There have definitely been mosquitoes.  I get bitten on my ankles," said Cannon.

It makes it tough for Cannon to get in his morning walk, while trying to fight the bite.

"I walk fast," Cannon jokes.  "I'll sometimes spray repellent on."

Cannon's neighborhood is one of four areas in Dallas that ground trucks sprayed Monday night to kill off some of the pesky mosquitoes.

Four more neighborhoods will be targeted Tuesday night, where an increasing number of female mosquitoes have been trapped, the kind that are more likely to spread the deadly disease.

Right now, none of the mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in the city or by Dallas County health officials.

Thompson said Duncanville has been having an issue with a huge number of mosquitoes and they've not taken action to ground spray.  Right now, the city's policy said if mosquitoes don't test positive for the virus, crews don't spray.  Their City Council plans to address the problem at its meeting Tuesday night.

So far this season, a Fort Worth woman in her 40s is the first and only person diagnosed in the Metroplex with the disease.  But, after North Texas became the epicenter of the country's deadliest season in 2012, health leaders are striking before infected mosquitoes do.

Right now, Arlington is the largest city in America without buses or trains.

"That's been said about Arlington for a long time. This is a great step for the city and an important partnership," said Dick Ruddell, president of the Fort Worth Transportation Authority.

Arlington, in fact, has a larger population compared to cities like New Orleans, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.

On Monday, The T approved a two-year pilot project that will bring buses to the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington and the downtown district.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit will run the buses, which will originate from the CentrePort station.

The two-year project will cost an estimated $1.4 million.

Ruddell said the transportation endeavor will drive the city's economic growth by allowing more students to access UT Arlington's facilities and by making it possible for more people to shop and eat in the city.

Ruddell said some citizens are worried that the public buses could bring in crime and vagrancy. He said the current evidence doesn't support those fears and the buses will be safe and secure.

Buses will start running in mid-August, just a few days before fall classes start at UT Arlington. All students will be able to ride at a reduced fare.

Azle police are searching for a woman missing since about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials said the woman, 61-year-old Donna Johnstone of Springtown, may have an altered mental state, could be disoriented and has been prescribed several medications following a recent surgery.

According to a report by AzleNews, the woman became lost after leaving an appointment with her Dallas doctor Monday afternoon.  Family members, who last spoke with the woman at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, said she sounded confused and disoriented.

The woman's vehicle was found abandoned at about midnight Tuesday and police said they believe the woman to be on foot now.

A family spokesperson told the AzleNews that the woman had surgery about 10 days ago and that a pain pump and medication have left her confused and that she had no earlier signs of dementia.

Police are actively searching for the woman in the woods east of both North Ash and South Ash avenues toward Eagle Mountain Lake, AzleNews reports.

Further information, including a description and possible clothing, is expected to be released soon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Azle Police Department at 817-444-3221.

One of the survivors of the tragic limousine fire on California's San Mateo-Hayward Bridge is telling a heartbreaking story of loss.

Speaking with great difficulty, as if she were shell-shocked, Neila Arrellano, 36, of Oakland, said she lost five of her friends Saturday night after they were trapped by flames inside a stretch limousine on the bridge over the San Francisco Bay.

Watching the interview is painful. Arrellano utters words through tears and gasps. English is not her first language and it is also a bit of a challenge to understand everything that  she is saying.

But she did recount what she remembered, most of all, that there was smoke in the back of the limousine.

"I saw smoke in the back of the car," she said. "There is a smoke, there is smoke... Stop the car, stop the car. I told you, there is smoke...I said, 'Open the door.' But he didn't do anything. He was on the phone."

In a separate interview, the limo driver, Orville Brown, told NBC Bay Area that at first he thought when he heard the word "smoke," he thought one of the nine women in the back of the limo wanted a cigarette. It wasn't until a short time later that he realized that smoke meant fire.

That's when he jumped into action, and started to dial 911, which was why he was on the phone. But at that point, he said, the limo was fully engulfed in flames.

Limousine Driver Described Fiery, Fatal Accident

Arrellano was part of a bachelorette party on their way to a Foster City hotel to celebrate their friend's wedding. The bride is among those who died.

Five of the nine women on board were unable to escape from the limo and died when flames and smoke spread through the rear of the passenger compartment.

Only four passengers were able to get out alive.  Three remained in the hospital Monday night suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.Arrellano, a nurse who works at the Fruitvale Health Center in Oakland, said she got out by sliding her body through the partitian in the front of the limo. She was the first one who got out safely.

She said she thought all of the women tried to get to the front of the vehicle because the flames were in the back. She wasn't sure if any of them tried to get out either of the back doors.

In three video clips posted below, Arrellano describes through tears how the events surrounding the fire unfolded.
